2009 Medical/Solar Mission to Raktrul, Tibet The medical/solar team accomplished a great deal in a short amount of time. As project director, I want to thank everyone who helped to make this trip a success. Walt Ratterman, Sharon Lang and Don Dyer were the core participants, without them we would have never gotten off the ground. Of course, Bardor Rinpoche, his family and all of the villagers from around Raktrul made this whole project possible. We are most grateful to everyone. We went expecting to set up a temporary clinic, do a needs analysis (still in the making), install 800-1000 watts in solar power and get a buy in from the surrounding villages for future projects. We got more than we could have ever hoped for. We saw over 1100 patients in 11 days! 700 pairs of eyeglasses were distributed! We gave backpacks and school supplies to close to 150 local school children. We had budgeted $24,000 dollars for 1000 watts of power, due to incredible pricing, we got 2000 watts at $18,000, we lit up five areas with an original goal of two, with power to spare! The most incredible news was that the Chinese government is giving back land nearby with two schoolhouses and a small house that the villages committed to turn into a medical facility (Pictures in the medical photo gallery, long brown buildings). This takes care of the $100,000 we thought we needed for a permanent building. Now we can spend the money on x-ray, dental, doctors, etc. We also have started training a young woman (Doira, our cook) to be a translator and clinic assistant. We will continue to identify people like her to become nurses and community health workers. When it comes to the needs of these villagers, much of it starts at the basics: hygiene, infrastructure, clean water, sanitation. Many of them have probably never seen a toilet in their life. They work so hard it’s amazing their joints don’t give out (actually we probably treated over 2000 Tibetan knees with acupuncture while there!). Yet, with all the adversity and hard knocks they are some of the happiest, grateful and loving people I have ever met. Their devotion to spirituality, family and community permeated everything they do. We learned a lot from them. We hope to go back in 1-2 years. The medical facility probably won’t be ready for 2 years, but we have already had inquiries from medical professionals asking to participate.
