DescriptionIrritable Bowel Syndrome is an illness of the small and large intestines, which generally has an absence of structural damage to the intestines. IBS consists of various degrees of constipation, diarrhea and abdominal pain, usually presenting as a reaction to stress, diet, or environmental influences in a susceptible patient. This is one of the most common gastrointestinal diagnosed in the U.S. It is estimated that 1 in 5 US adults have this condition. IBS is a disease predominantly of women and the average age of onset is 20-40. It is usually accompanied by an intolerance to certain foods and is often triggered by eating. SymptomsSymptoms can present in various ways: spasms in the colon causing pain and constipation; chronic watery diarrhea showing high levels of mucus; or abdominal pain and alternating constipation and diarrhea. CausesFactors surrounding the onset and maintenance of the disorder include diet, drugs, hormones or, especially, emotional stresses such as depression, hysteria, obsessive-compulsive traits, anxiety and resentment. Common emotional upsets associated with IBS are marital problems, death of a loved one, worrying over children or job, or just excessive anxiety. Most likely there will be a series of triggers, which separately would not provoke an outbreak, may do so when combined. In other words, food sensitivities, an imbalance in the intestinal flora, and emotional or stress triggers affect the GI system and can create instability. |
